Recently, CHI partnered with the RUtv Network to produce a short film titled: "A Day in the Life of Joe Rutgers." The film follows "Joe Rutgers" on a typical day. The video is loosely based on the Top 10 Misperceptions of the RU Sure Campaign (for more info visit the RU Sure tab under projects). This film seeks not only to entertain but to educate. Just as many of the comical aspects of Joe's experience are based in truth, so is the segment about drinking. The narrator reminds Joe that not everybody at Rutgers drinks, most students at Rutgers don't drink to get drunk, and not everyone who parties gets wasted.

Welcome to CHI

The Center for Communication and Health Issues (CHI) was founded on the belief that communication is an integral part of the relationally-based nature of health issues. Therefore, our mission is twofold:

  • To explore communication in health decision making as it affects communities, especially college students and youth.
  • To design, implement and evaluate campus and community based education, intervention, and prevention programs and policies.

We are a consortium of University faculty, health educators, counselors, residence life staff, enforcement personnel, graduate and undergraduate students who are leaders in creating an understanding of the role of communication and health issues in the college learning experience through: research, education, prevention, program development, and evaluation.

CHI members came together initially to study dangerous drinking on the campus and design education and treatment programs addressing issues of alcohol use among college students. We have also conducted research on cigarette smoking and nicotine addiction as well as participating in a project with the Rutgers Department of Sexual Assault Services & Crime Victim Assistance to examine ways to address domestic violence among college students. Currently CHI members are partnering with internationally recognized Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies in a NIDA funded Transdisciplinary Prevention Research Center.
